In between the laptop shenanigans this weekend, I went to David's Bridal for an appointment with the alterations department. Since I've lost a bit of weight and plan to lose some more, my mom and I wanted to make sure they could alter my wedding dress properly.
The dress is made up of several vertical panels of fabric. The dress would basically have to be completely taken apart, each panel made smaller and then put back together. Well, the alterations department had other plans.
I put the dress on and we ask the lady if she can alter the dress. She says yes. We ask her how exactly she would do it. She says she would take it in on the right side. The right side only, we ask? Yep.
Ummm...what? That would make the dress lopsided. I now have two options. My mom has located the same dress, the only one left in the United States, in Reno, Nevada. The only problem...it's a size 6... which makes it a street size 4. There's no way I'm getting down to a size 4. Even if I could get my waist to a size 4, my eastern European hips aren't going near that size.
My second option...buy a completely different dress. So I start trying on dresses. I narrow it down to my old dress (I'm stuck on it and think I can find a different tailor that isn't crazy) and a new dress. My mom is stuck on my old dress. She hated it at first and said it looked like my grandmother's sofa...but for some reason it's grown on her. I'm leaning toward the new dress.
We decide to call in a second opinion. I try calling Kristen. Her cell is off and no one is picking up the home phone. So we call in a recent bride... my sister in law, Sara. Yes, her name is Sara too.
I put on my original wedding dress. She likes it. I put on the new dress...she loves it. My mom is still not convinced. She gets one of the alteration ladies to pin up the bustle. Now she's sold.
So I now have a new dress that is two full sizes smaller than the original dress. What's even better is DB let us return the old dress and put the money toward the new dress. We did the same with the pettycoat I bought since the new dress already has a pettycoat built in.
Less than 9 months to go!
